Course Description
This course introduces how to create your own spatial data. A lot of maps are on paper but we can use a tool called Georeferencing to import that paper map and transform it into a digital map with spatial reference. This process is required for maps used during mapping workshops to take the data collected and import it into a GIS. The second step of that process is called digitizing. Digitizing is the process of turning the raster map into vector data. Any trails identified on the paper map can be drawn in the GIS to create a line vector feature.
The course will support the learner in fundamental GIS skills. Skills toward developing competencies in importing a paper map into ArcGIS Pro, georeferencing that map to give it spatial coordinates, and digitizing the features on the map to create an Indigenous Knowledge geodatabase.
Key Concepts Covered:
- Import your paper map to a digital map.
- Georeference your map.
- Organize and create feature classes in a geodatabase.
- Digitize the features on your paper map.
- Edit existing feature classes
- Converting paper maps to digital maps with spatial reference through Georeferencing.
- Digitize point, line and polygon features from reference data.
