Who we are

Sea ice is vital to life in the North as it connects communities and serves as a highway and hunting platform. But with sea ice becoming less predictable, ice travel risk has increased for northern communities.

SmartICE is a community-based Work Integrated Social Enterprise (WISE) offering climate change adaptation tools and services that integrate Inuit knowledge of sea ice with monitoring technology. Our information contributes to more informed decisions for safer sea ice travel and supports community economic development such as outfitting and fisheries. By augmenting local knowledge and supporting traditional sea ice use, SmartICE also promotes Inuit culture, intergenerational learning, and community wellbeing.


The SmartIce Learning Management System

The SmartIce Learning Management System is home to courses that are available for SmartIce Operators and staff.


Registration

If this is your first time visiting our site and you would like to enroll in our courses, please contact us directly. We need to manually register you as a student first to use the site. Once this has been completed, you will receive an email with information on how to log in to start taking courses.


Once you have been registered to use our site, please review all the information below to assist you on your learning journey. Click on each tab below to learn more.

Registered Students – The Basics

Once you have been registered you will receive an email with information and your confidential details:

  • Site login link
  • Your username and email address
  • A link to set your password
Visit the site and click on the Login button in the menu
You will then enter your Username (or Email Address) and Password. Your Username is unique and must be typed in exactly as it was setup.
Once you have successfully logged in, you will automatically be on your private My Courses page. This page will have no Course information showing when you first login as you have not yet Enrolled in any Courses.
Enrolling into a course and how to use or modify information on your My Courses page is shown on other tabs on the left.

You can reset your password in 2 areas on the site if you need to

By clicking on Login and then clicking on the lost password link. A page will open for you to reset your password
By using the My Account button on the My Courses page. And editing the information in the My Account page
You can only update your own Profile information by being Logged In and by clicking on the My Account Button:
You can update your information on the My account page, this is for:
  • Display Name
  • Nickname
  • Email
  • Title
  • Password

Registered Students – Courses

Not logged into site

When you first visit our site and you are not logged in and you click on a Course to view the information, you will see a banner that says: “You are not yet enrolled in this course” Login to Enroll.

Click on the button to Login and you will automatically be Enrolled in the Course and re-directed to the Course start page where you can begin your course.

Logged into Site

If you are already logged in and you click on a Course to view the information, you will see a banner that says: “You are not yet enrolled in this course” Take This Course.

Click on the button to Take This Course and you will automatically be Enrolled in the Course and you can begin your course.
If you are logged in, you can also see which Courses you are Enrolled in and/or your Progress if you visit the Courses page. Blue Ribbons will show on top of the Course Image.

Private My Courses Page

You will only be able to view the My Courses page if you are logged in. This is your private page/account that no one else has access to. Once enrolled in any Course, you can visit the My Courses page at any time to view:

  • Courses you are enrolled in
  • Your progress in the course
  • Any quizzes you have taken
  • Your Certificates
  • Your Earned Badges
  • Menu Buttons to other private page areas

Each Course will have data you can review, you can use the drop down icon to expand the data for each course you are enrolled in. Your header will also show you some data for No. of Courses, Completed & Certificates.

Private My Portfolio Page

You will only be able to view the My Portfolio page if you are logged in. This is your private assignment & uploads area that no one else has access to.

Assignments

Once enrolled in any Course that requires you to submit an Assignment, you can visit the My Portfolio ( assignments section) Page at any time and you will be able to:

  • See list of all your Courses
  • Expand the course to view the assignment you attached to the course and it’s status (approved or pending)
  • Comment on an Assignment
  • View/Download your submitted Assignment
  • ** Assignments can not be deleted from the system once graded **
Commenting on an Assignment

In the My Portfolio (assignments section) page you can click on the Comment Icon to add a Comment to it (a new page will open) – see steps below:

Click on the Comment Icon, if you hover over it, it will show the number of comments
Once you have clicked the Icon, a comment page will open (this is a No comments yet view)
Click on Post a Comment, and a form will open for you to type your comment in. Remember to click on the Post Comment button to save it.
Once you have saved your Comment, your page will refresh and you will now see a comment entry for this specific asssignment (this is a comment Submitted view)
If you now go back to your My Portfolio (assignments section) and hover over the Assignment comment, it will show the updated number of comments
Viewing / Downloading an Assignment

In the My Portfolio (assignments section) page you can click on the Document Icon to view/download it (a new page will open) – see steps below:

From the My Courses page, click on the button for My Portfolio
Once the My Portfolio page is open, go to the Course that you submitted an Assignment for and cick on the expand button
When you can see the Assignment Title you want to view/download – click on the Icon next to it. Your assignment will open and you can then save it to your computer if you want to

Uploads

You will be able to view/use this section once you are logged in.

You must be Logged into the site to continue/resume any courses you were busy with. If you are busy with a course and you log out, your data is always saved.

The easiest way to resume a course you were busy with is to:

Login to the site
You will be taken to your My Courses page
On that page you will see all the courses you are enrolled in
Click on the Title of the course you wish to resume
You will automatically be taken to your course content page. The icons will show you where you are in your course to continue learning.

Once you have Completed a Course you will earn a Certificate. Your Certificate is generated in Pdf format and has a unique certificate number on it. You can only earn 1 Certificate per course.

There are 3 ways you can view your earned Certificates, either straight away or at a later date.

Instant – View Certificate

  • As soon as you complete your Course and you click on the last Continue Button you will see a banner saying you have earned a Certificate.
    • Instantly click on the button and your Certificate will open for you to Print or save

My Courses Page – View Certificate

  • If you want to go back and view/print or download your Certificate at a later date:
    • Visit the My Courses page
    • Look for the Course you want to view your Certificate for and you will see a certificate icon
    • Click on the icon and your Certificate will open

Any Course Page – View Certificate

  • If you are logged into the site and visit any Course page. If you have completed the course and earned a certificate, you will see a banner at the top of the page with a button to view your certificate.

Private Course Chats

You will only be able to add Chats and view Chat if you are logged in. Once you are enrolled in any course and you are taking the course, there is a section at the top of each Course, Section or Topic for you to start a chat. You can also attach a file within the chat.

Very Important regarding chats

  1. You must be logged in to Chat
  2. Chats are NOT private, anyone else logged in and taking the same course will see all the chats
  3. You cannot delete a chat
  4. Chats are per course not for the entire site

Accessing Chat per Course

On each main course page you will see 2 tabs. One for Course and one for Chat. You can access chat anytime on a per course basis, by clicking on the chat button .

If you are not logged in and go to a course page, and click on chat, it will tell you to login
If you are logged in and go to a course page and click on chat, you will see the section to enter your chat
Once you have entered your chat and clicked on the save button (blue with white arrow), you will see your message on the Chat tab.

* Each chat is linked to the exact Course that you entered it on *

You can visit the Chat Tab at any time to see if you have a response to your chat and to also view other chats for the same course. To view chats per course, remember to go to the relevant Course Page and then Click on the Chat Tab
