SmartBUOY Technical Training Section 1

In this lesson, the participants will learn what the SmartBUOY is, how it works, the data it collects and what the data is used for. They will learn about the components that make up a SmartBUOY and how to organize them to help them prepare for the assembly process.

Vocabulary

  1. SmartBUOY – The sensor that SmartICE uses to measure the sea-ice. This sensor is stationary and uses thermistors to measure the ice.
  2. Thermistors – Temperature probes that measure temperature of air, sea-ice, water, and snow.
  3. Components – a part or element of a larger whole. In this situation, the SmartBUOY is made up of several components.
  4. Conductivity – the degree to which a specified material conducts electricity, calculated as the ratio of the current density in the material to the electric field that causes the flow of current. It is the reciprocal of resistivity.
