Course Description
This course introduces the art and science of map making and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This course is separated into two parts: Part one is called Intro to Mapping and part two is called Intro to GIS. The first course will introduce how objects from the real world are recorded and put on a map. The course will cover location, coordinates, and different types of spatial data. The second course will introduce GIS and digital mapping. It will introduce the concept of mapping on a computer system.
The course will support the learner in fundamental GIS skills, developing competencies in a deeper understanding of spatial data and map making.

A GIS (Geographic Information System) is a tool that helps people work with data related to places. It uses maps to link information to places so we can see where things are and what else is happening in those locations.
This kind of system is used in many areas like managing cities, airports, land, wildlife, and even weather forecasts. GIS helps people spot patterns and understand how things are connected in different areas—for example, it can be useful for studying ice and how it changes.
Key Concepts Covered:
- Location and how to describe it with coordinates.
- How spatial coordinates relate to different spatial data types.
- Spatial data as vector and raster data.
- The elements of a Geographic Information System
- How layer order and layer visibility affects the appearance of a map.
- Describe geographic location with landmarks, placenames, and a coordinate reference system (latitude and longitude)
- Recognize the difference between ways to describe location Decimal Degrees and Degrees, Minutes, Seconds
- Describe how spatial coordinates define different spatial data types.
- Distinguish between vector and raster data types.
- Identify the core elements of a Geographic Information System.
- Able to manipulate layer order and visibility on a map to control visual hierarchy, map aesthetics, and data clarity.
- Differentiate between features and feature classes.
